We would like to express our sincere condolences on the passing of Dr.
NEGISHI Ei-ichi, the recipient of the 2010 Nobel Prize in Chemistry and
first recipient of an honorary doctorate from Okayama University. From
2005 until 2010, Dr. NEGISHI gave lectures at the Faculty of Science
almost every year in recognition of his close relationship with Okayama
University researchers.
In October 2006, this relationship was further deepened when Okayama
University concluded an academic exchange agreement between our Graduate
School of Natural Science and Technology and the Faculty of Science at
Purdue University, where Dr. NEGISHI taught for many years.
Even after receiving the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in November 2010, Dr.
NEGISHI continued to support our university; for example, by providing
valuable advice as an external evaluation committee member of the
Okayama University Energy and Environmental New Functional Materials
Center, which has become a cornerstone of the current Research Institute
for Interdisciplinary Sciences. In March 2011, Okayama University held a
special lecture to commemorate the 10-year anniversary of Dr. NEGISHI’s
Nobel Prize in Chemistry and awarded Dr. NEGISHI with Okayama
University’s first honorary doctorate.
We thank Dr. NEGISHI for his significant contributions to the
development of Okayama University and pledge to honor his outstanding
achievements. May he rest in peace.
President MAKINO Hirofumi
