●History of Study in Japan Fair in Myanmar and ASEAN
The predecessor of Study in Japan Fair was “the Study in Japan Seminar”
which was held 11 times from 2003 to 2013 by Japan Student Services
Organization (JASSO) in Myanmar. In 2014, the event was expanded and
held as “Study in Japan Fair” for the first time to commemorate the 60th
anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between
Myanmar and Japan. In the same year, Okayama University was appointed by
Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT) -
Japan to implement the “Coordinator for Study in Japan (Myanmar)”. The
fair was co-organized in 2015 then it has been held as host since 2016.
The name of the project was changed to “Study in Japan Global Network
Project in ASEAN” in 2018. In 2020-2021, Okayama University hosted the
fair for Cambodia and Laos for the first time, and 2 fairs for Myanmar.
In addition, we have been holding the fairs online since last year.
●What is Study in Japan Global Network Project in ASEAN
Okayama University was appointed to implement the “Study in Japan Global
Network Project in ASEAN” which is funded by Ministry of Education,
Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT) - Japan in 2019. Our aim
is to increase the number of international students from ASEAN 1.5 times
in 5 years. In the previous phase, Okayama University was commissioned
by MEXT - Japan to implement the “Coordinator for Study in Japan
(Myanmar)” in 2014, aiming to double the number of students from Myanmar
over a 5-year period. As a result, we were able to triple the number of
students in 4 years, achieving our goal one year ahead. In 2018, the
name of the project was changed to “Study in Japan Global Network
Project in ASEAN” and the target region was expanded to 10 ASEAN
countries.
Currently, we have oversea offices in Yangon, Mandalay, Bangkok, Phnom Penh, and Vientiane. From these 5 bases, we will work to recruit excellent international students from ASEAN for study in Japan.
