【offer information, OKAYAMA University】Graduate School of Environmental and Life Science Student Afia Boney Wins Best Story Map Category in Your Caribbean Story Student Competition!

July 05, 2022

Afia Boney, a first-year master’s student at the Okayama University Graduate School of Environmental and Life Science, won the Best Story Map category of the Your Caribbean Story Student Competition for her research on "Prediction of Rainfall in Trinidad and Tobago using Machine Learning”.

The competition gives university students from the Caribbean who specialize in geospatial information the chance to share their research and is co-sponsored by Global Geospatial Information Management (GGIM). GGIM was established by UN member states and international organizations in 2011 to bring together experts in geospatial information to share their knowledge and tackle global issues. The organization aims to address global challenges such as climate change, food security and energy issues through the establishment of a cooperative framework for the development of technology related to geospatial information, including mapping and surveying. The Geospatial Information Authority of Japan has been contributing to the organization since its inception by dispatching representatives and serving as co-chair of the Working Group on Disasters (WG-Disasters).

Commenting on her project’s selection, Afia Boney said, “I'm thrilled that I won this competition and I have an opportunity to work alongside experts in the field. I am especially grateful to my supervisor, Professor Nishiyama, for his support. I would like to encourage everyone to look for opportunities to contribute and enhance their skills and knowledge, and compete on a global or regional scale.”.
